Reviewer: Gorix (Panama City, FL)

My first exposure to BAR wrestling, and this first impression was a blast. From top-to-bottom there was mostly great quality wrestling with a hot opener in Romero/Fenix. These two started out with some friendly wrestling, but then Rocky’s ego pushed Fenix to the limit. I liked that these two did not go overboard with their spots by focusing more on engaging the crowd and telling a fun little story to set the mood for the show. Taya/Panda and Decay/WCTT were quite fun with the latter being a mix of comedy antics and decent mixed-tag team action. I find Ryan’s obsession with his genitalia to be grating though. Luchasauras vs Cage was a brilliantly hard-hitting big-man affair that helped Luchasaurus leave a strong impact with a neat finish. Next up we get my personal motn. Gangrel, despite his age, somehow had possibly the best match of his career in 2017. While I enjoyed seeing his performances in Portland’s WCWC, he brought his A-game to Willie Mack with some lovely brawling and perfectly executing his old-school moves. Mack was no slouch either however with his willingness to take a serious beating. By the end it felt like a full-blown war had occurred between these two that would not have been out of place in a NJPW NEVER Title bout. Another gem of a match from Mack with due credit to Gangrel. Then comes the chaotic 10-man main event. I will be honest here, it was a mixed bag of pro-wrestling greatness and stupidity that converted me into a fan of the awesome Tyler Bateman, who is far-too underutilized here but great in his segments. Nurse Ratchet is a cool character and Peter Avalon is also great here. With so many people though it got too messy like Avalon and Rosas seemingly sharing the ring all the time with the ref also being rather lax (come on Knox, you can properly officiate a PWG Young Bucks match but not this?). Some poor booking of eliminations in the second half deflated the crowd too much, so the match also struggled to regain its footing several times with ring announcer Melissa Santos and commentary even audibly remarking about how brutal it got. I won’t forget the fun parts of the first half while they lasted, and the final few minutes were pretty good at least. Switch Gangrel/Mack with the 10-man’s spot, then this show would be just right. With the spectrum of quality present and an under-2 hour run time that goes by quickly, This is Halloween makes for an extremely solid recommendation.
