I still remember the first time I saw the Fabulous Freebirds. It was back in 1984, and at 15, I was just starting to get back into a childhood passion, pro wrestling. Living in Tulsa, Oklahoma, I had numerous viewing options back in the territorial days. Of course, I thought then (and still do) that my local group, run by Bill Watts, was the best in the U.S. But our Texas next door neighbors had some pretty darn strong action as well. The thing was, I was always a die-hard fan of the bad guys. THe first couple of times I gave World Class wrestling a shot, I couldn't help but notice that despite some cool heels, every match seemed like it was won by the fan favorite. ANd most of the time, that fan fave's surname was 'Von Erich'. So while I never missed a moment of Mid-South or WCW, I only watched Papa Fritz's program sporadically. Until I tuned in one night, and got a glimpse of the Freebirds-it was love at first sight. The fans absolutely DESPISED them. Like most people, I found myself drawn mostly to the team's mouthpiece, Michael Hayes. Big, mean, tough, and funny, Hayes had the quick sadistic wit that had turned me into fans of guys like Ted Dibiase and Ric Flair. But my wrestling I.Q. rose quickly (thanks to sheer unbridled fanatacism for the sport), and tho I was and still am a huge fan of ol' "P.S.", I soon realized that not only was the big man of the group, Terry Gordy, also the most talented...he was as good as anybody I'd ever seen in a ring. Today, he's just a notch below Flair and Terry Funk on my short list of personal Hall of Famers. This shoot is exactly what you'd expect, and a must for all Gordy fans. Soft-spoken, pleasant, and eager to share some classic tales from the day, Terry lays it all out. Of course, knowing Gordy died not long after this was recorded casts a pall over the whole show. But put that out of your mind for a couple of hours, and enjoy hearing from one of the last true pro wrestlers, Terry Gordy.
